Men's tennis release 2017 fall schedule

Sept. 17, 2017

DAVIS, Calif. — Four events, including the annual Aggie Invitational, highlight the 2017 fall schedule for the UC Davis men’s tennis team as released by Head Coach Eric Steidlmayer on Tuesday. The Aggies are currently ranked second in the Big West Conference, behind UC Santa Barbara, as of Sept. 13.

The Aggies open the fall with the Aggie Invitational at the Mayra Welch Tennis Center on Sept. 29-Oct. 1, beginning with doubles play at 9:00 a.m. each day and then to singles play. Last year at this event, UC Davis claimed two crowns on the final day. One of the crowns came from recent Aggie graduate Eli Whittle in his victory in the Flight B singles match, and the other crown came from senior Everett Maltby and recent graduate Jesse Ross in the Flight B doubles match after defeating fellow teammates Max Pham, a current sophomore, and Whittle. Prior to their own defeat, Pham and Whittle defeated Sacramento State’s Donald Hall and Dom Miller in the semifinals.

At the same invitational, sophomore David Goulak and senior Tommy Lam won the Flight A doubles semifinals match against Santa Clara’s Connor Garnett and Robert Seby, but were eventually defeated by Pacific’s Jose Chamba Gomesz and Alex Giannini in the finals match.

The remaining events of this season’s fall schedule will be on the road. UC Davis will travel to Stockton, Calif., for the six-day ITA Northwest Regionals tournament hosted by the University of the Pacific from Oct. 19-24, each day starting at 8:00 a.m. At last season’s ITA Northwest Regionals tournament, Goulak and Lam advanced to the semifinals of the main draw in the doubles match, but were defeated, 8-5, by Stanford’s Sameer Kumar and Yale Goldberg.

Some of the Aggies will have a two-day break before returning back to the same courts for the Pacific Tiger Invitational on Oct 27-29. The team will be divided as the remaining portion of the players will only have one day’s rest before returning to the courts down in Los Angeles to play at USC from Oct. 26-30. Both invitationals will start their days at 8:00 a.m.

The Aggies’ wrap-up their fall season with the Southern California Intercollegiates tournament on Oct. 30, and will return to the all-familiar court at the University of the Pacific on Jan. 13 to start their spring competition season.
