DAVIS, Calif. - The UC Davis men's tennis team continues its fall tournament action at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Oct. 19-23 at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex at Saint Mary's College and the Moraga Country Club in Moraga, Calif.
The USTA/ITA Regional Championships feature some of the top players from across the country with over 8,000 student-athletes from NCAA Div. I, II, III, NAIA, Junior and Community Colleges in action this weekend. The Div. I Men's Regional Championships will be held at 12 different sites.
Play on Friday and Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. with matches taking place at both the Moraga Country Club and on the campus of Saint Mary's.
The competition field is highlighted by 10 singles players named to the Campbell's/ITA Preseason Rankings in September, including No. 13 Kyle McMorrow of Washington and Cal's Ben McLachlan who is ranked 16th.
Oregon's Robin Cambler and Jeff Mullen came in at No. 27 in the preseason doubles rankings while Santa Clara's John Lamble and Iya Osintsev are ranked 30th to headline the doubles field.
UC Davis will send all nine Aggies to the regional tournament as Adam Luba, Alec Haley, Brett Bacharach, George Horowitz, Kyle Miller, Mitch Thorp and Toki Sherbakov will each compete in singles and doubles.
Hugo Verdi-Fortin will compete in singles only, opening his tournament against Stanford's Anthony Tsodikov on Friday at 8:30 a.m. Thorp and Sherbakov will also begin singles action at 8:30 a.m., while Horowitz is set to start at 10 a.m. Haley's singles match is set for a 10:30 a.m. start while Bacharach and Miller being play at noon and 12:15 p.m., respectively. Luba will be the last Aggie to take the court in singles, starting his match at 1:45 p.m.
Freshman Adam Levie will compete in doubles only, pairing with Toki Sherbakov. Their first round action begins on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. against San Francisco's Germaine Bahri and Richard Bucalem while Haley and Miller will also pair up for an 8:30 a.m. match against Stanford's Daniel Ho and Jamin Ball. Bacharach and Horowitz will take on Thai Tu and Will Schumacher of USF at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday while Luba and Thorp's first-round doubles match begins at 9:45 a.m.
UC Davis recently finished competition at the UCSB Classic. Sherbakov finished sixth overall in the "A" singles flight, then paired with Luba to take seventh place in Flight "B" doubles. Bacharach advanced to the ninth-place match of the Flight "B" singles backdraw in just his second tournament as an Aggie, but was edged to place tenth overall.
The Aggies will close the fall tournament season at the Pacific Tigers Invitational Nov. 1-3 in Stockton.
