One of the most respected coaches in the West, Jim Hunt returned to the Woody Wilson Track to serve as UC Davis’ men’s and women’s distance coach in 2000.
Hunt previously headed the Aggie men’s cross country program from 1989 to 1992 in addition to his duties as distance coach. He left UC Davis to coach the track and cross country programs at nearby Sierra College, and has since returned to the Aggie programs.
Before his previous stint with the Aggies, Hunt was head track and cross country coach for Humboldt State for 23 years. During that time he won six titles in the Far Western Conference and was named that league’s coach of the year five times. In 1993, he was inducted into the HSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
In addition to his collegiate experience, Hunt also served as the USATF Men’s Development distance and middle distance coach from 1981 to 1992. Additionally, he was a coach at the U.S. West Team Sports Festival in 1981. He currently holds the position as international director of distance running and race walking for Special Olympics International.
Hunt is a 1949 graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich. He later earned his master’s degree from Chico State.
In July 2000, Coach Hunt served as the coordinator of the Masters, Disabled and Special Olympic Events at the Olympic Track & Field Trials in Sacramento.
