A two-time conference champion in swimming and four-year letterwinner in water polo at UC Davis, Matt Jones enters his first season as a volunteer assistant on Steve Doten's staff. He previously served as an assistant for Jamey Wright with the Aggie women's water polo team.
Jones' name was well-established in the local aquatics community well before it appeared on UC Davis rosters. As a two-sport prep at Davis Senior High, he earned three All-America awards in swimming and a fourth-team honor in water polo. Jones helped lead the Blue Devils to Sac-Joaquin Section titles in both sports every year.
Jones was a four-year contributor at two-meter defense in water polo, but made his most notable accomplishments as a member of the UC Davis swimming team. In 2004, he captured Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference titles in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events. His time of 1:48.38 in the 200 back was the fastest by any Aggie since John Keppeler set a school and Division II record in 1994. Through 2005-06, Jones continues to rank second all-time at UC Davis in that event.
Jones graduated from UC Davis in 2006 with a degree in communication.
