LA JOLLA, Calif. - Junior Adam Bennett scored five goals in a 10-8 comeback win over Cal Baptist, then was one of three Aggies to score two goals in an 11-7 upset over eighth-ranked UC San Diego in the third-place game of the UCSD Triton Invitational men's water polo tournament at Canyonview Aquatics Center Sunday.

The Aggies, ranked in a tie for 11th in the preseason national coaches' poll, improve to 3-1 for the season. They now have scored wins over the top two teams in the Western Water Polo Association, for which UC Davis was chosen third in the preseason voting.

Driver Grant Muenter scored the go-ahead goal with less than three minutes remianing in the third period against the Tritons, breaking the 6-6 halftime tie. Bennett and senior Jesse Tweed added goals in the final 80 seconds of the frame to extend the lead to 9-6. Muenter and senior Nick Arrigo each had two goals to match Bennett's total in the nightcap.

Bennett, who scored just 10 goals as a sophomore in 2006, had four goals in UC Davis' second-half effort against the Lancers. CBU led 2-1 after the first period and took a 4-3 halftime lead on Jeff Woosltenhulme's goal at the 2:46 mark in the second quarter. The Lancers stretched their edge by as much as 8-5 on Josh Harris' goal with 1:26 remaining in the third, but that proved to be their final scoring tally. Bennett cut the lead to two in the final minute of the third, scored the equalizer early in the fourth, then the game-winner with three minutes left in the game. Bennett finished the day with 10 goals in the four-game tournament.

UC Davis is next in action at California on Sunday. The Aggie-Golden Bear matchup represents a reunion of different sorts, as seniors Joseph Smith and Matt MacLachlan both transferred from Cal two seasons ago. Furthermore, Aggie head coach Steve Doten and assistant coach Tom Kurth each played water polo for the Bears.
