Aggies Drop Season-Opener At No.12 Loyola Marymount

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Ryan Chapatte scored three goals and the Lions raced to a 7-2 halftime lead they would not surrender as No.12 Loyola Marymount defeated UC Davis, 10-7, in a season-opening men's water polo match for both teams in front of a capacity crowd of 550 at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.

The Lions jumped ahead 3-0 following goals by Tamas Szego, Endre Rex-Kiss and Kris Barr in the first period. UC Davis got on the board to cut the lead to 3-1 at the end of the first period following a goal by sophomore Patrick Jacobson, his first of two on the day. In the second period goals by Barr and Chapatte increased the lead to 5-1 before the Aggies responded with a goal from Jamie Turpen. Two more Lion goals increased the lead to 7-2 at halftime.

Tom Jay scored the first of his three goals on the day for UC Davis to open the third period, but goals by Rex-Kiss and Chapatte pushed the lead back to 9-3 for LMU. Jay would add his second goal of the period just before the quarter ended as the Lions took a 9-4 lead into the fourth period.

UC Davis outscored Loyola Marymount 3-1 in the final period but it was not enough as the Aggie dropped their season-opener.

For the game Jay led the way for UC Davis with three goals while Jacobson added two and Turpen and George Dingeldein each contributed one goal.

IN net, Aggie goalie Zach Wordes registered six saves while Lion keeper Ian Elliott was forced to make 16 saves on the afternoon.

The Aggie continue their season-opening roadswing through southern California as they participate in the Inland Empire Tournament Saturday and Sunday at the University of Redlands.
