LOS ANGELES, Calif. -
Ryan Chapatte scored three goals and the Lions raced to a 7-2 halftime lead they would not surrender as No.12 Loyola Marymount defeated UC Davis, 10-7, in a season-opening men's water polo match for both teams in front of a capacity crowd of 550 at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.
The Lions jumped ahead 3-0 following goals by Tamas Szego, Endre Rex-Kiss and Kris Barr in the first period. UC Davis got on the board to cut the lead to 3-1 at the end of the first period following a goal by sophomore Patrick Jacobson, his first of two on the day.
In the second period goals by Barr and Chapatte increased the lead to 5-1 before the Aggies responded with a goal from Jamie Turpen. Two more Lion goals increased the lead to 7-2 at halftime.
Tom Jay scored the first of his three goals on the day for UC Davis to open the third period, but goals by Rex-Kiss and Chapatte pushed the lead back to 9-3 for LMU. Jay would add his second goal of the period just before the quarter ended as the Lions took a 9-4 lead into the fourth period.
