REDLANDS, Calif. - Senior George Dingeldein scored three goals while Patrick Jacobson and Jamie Turpen added two goals each as UC Davis picked up its first win of the season with a 12-8 victory over Whittier College to conclude first-day play at the Inland Empire Men's Water Polo Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Aquatic Center. Earlier in the day the Aggies dropped an 11-6 contest against No.11 UC Santa Barbara.

With the split the Aggies move to 1-2 on the season

In the second match of the day, it was Whittier jumping out to the 3-2 lead after one period of play. By halftime the game was tied at 4-4 as the Aggie defense allowed just one score in the second period. It was all UC Davis in the third quarter as the Aggies outscored Whittier 6-2 in the period, taking a 10-6 lead before the two teams played even in the fourth period, scoring two goals each.

Dingeldein, who led the Aggies in scoring last season, recorded his first hat trick of the season while Jacobson, Turpen and Conor Duignan each added a pair of goals. Tom Jay, Kevin Bacharach and Brian Hodgens each added a goal in the contest.

"Whittier is a much improved team this year and they gave us a good game," said UC Davis head coach Steve Doten. "We got off to a little bit of a rocky start as we are trying different starting lineups to see what works best. But I think our conditioning really helped in the second half and it showed with our big third quarter.

"We also did a much better job in our 6-on-5 situations, converting four of six chances," Doten continued. "(Freshman) Erik (Acevedo) did a nice job in net for us and looked very confident in his first collegiate start."

In the day's first game, the Aggies faced No.11 UC Santa Barbara and it was the Gauchos who raced to an early lead then help on for the 11-6 victory.

The two teams played even in the first period, each scoring two goals before the Gauchos put up a five spot in the second to take a 7-2 halftime lead. Each team would score four goals in the second half but it was not enough for UC Davis to overcome the deficit.

Jacobson and Hodgens each scored two goals in the game while Jay and Matt Jones added one goal each.

"The second quarter against Santa Barbara got away from us," said Doten. "The rest of the game we played them pretty even but our chemistry is just not there yet. We're not reacting to game situations but it is just our opening weekend and that will come as we play more games."

UC Davis will conclude play at the Inland Empire Tournament on Sunday with games against Occidental and host Redlands.
