REDLANDS, Calif. - Freshman Patrick Jacobson scored three goals and the Aggie defense had its strongest showing of the young season as UC Davis defeated host Redlands, 5-4, Saturday afternoon on the first day of the Inland Empire Tournament held on the campus of the University of Redlands. Earlier in the day, UC Davis knocked off Chapman, 14-7.

With the pair of wins, UC Davis moves to 2-1 on the season.

Against Redlands, the two teams battled to the end. Each scored a pair of goals in the first and third quarters. But it was the Aggie defense that came through in the clutch as it held Redlands scoreless over the final eight minutes to earn the victory. Jacobson had the hat trick while George Dingeldein and Brook Rogers each added one goal.

In the day's first contest, the Aggies offense came alive as 11 different players scored a total of 14 goals in the victory over Chapman. Jamie Turpen, Aaron Andrikopoulos and Jonathan Burke each had two goals to lead the scoring outburst. In net, Zack Wordes went the distance, recording a season-best seven saves.

"It was good to see that we are capable of scoring a lot of goals," said Aggie Head Coach Steve Doten. "But today our defense was the key. Against Redlands, we knew it was going to be a tough game and the players responded. The guys are learning to play together and each game this season we have gotten better.

"Patrick (Jacobson) did an excellent job for us today," Doten continued. "He is one of our fastest players and did a good job of getting up on our counter attacks. George (Dingeldein) and Brook (Rogers) continue to give us a consistent scoring threat from the outside."

The Aggies conclude play in the Inland Empire Tournament on Sunday with contests against Occidental and Whittier.
