REDLANDS, Calif. - Jamie Turpen scored three goals and the Aggies made a late charge but it was not enough as Chaminade defeated UC Davis, 14-8, in the season-opening men's water polo match Friday evening at the University of Redlands.

Chaminade took control early as it raced to a 5-1 lead following the first quarter. By halftime the Aggie defense had settled in, allowing just two goals in the second period and finished the half trailing 7-2.

Following another low-scoring third quarter, the Aggie offense opened up with a five-goal period in the fourth. Chaminade would respond with five goals of its own to keep UC Davis at bay.

Turpen led the Aggies in the contest as he scored three goals, while Brook Rogers, George Dingeldein had two each and Jonathan Burke had one. Zack Wordes made four saves while playing the entire game in the goal.

"We started slow, which is typical for the first game of the season," said UC Davis Head Coach Steve Doten. "We got better as the game went along. It was a hard-fought first game and I look at it as a learning situation.

"George (Dingeldein) was a real spark plug and Jamie came up big late in the game," Doten continued.

UC Davis continues its season-opening weekend with two games Saturday in the Inland Empire Tournament at the University of Redlands.
