Aggie Defense Shines as UC Davis Defeats Redlands, 5-4

Sept. 14, 2003

REDLANDS, Calif. - Freshman Josh McNeely scored a pair of goals and goalie Zach Wordes recorded 10 saves as UC Davis defeated host Redlands, 5-4, on the final day of play at the Inland Empire Men's Water Polo Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Thompson Aquatic Center. Later in the day the Aggies posted a 15-2 victory over Occidental College.

With the sweep the Aggies improve to 3-2 on the season, winning their last three contests.

The two teams played even through the first period as both scored a pair of goals. UC Davis started a bigger lineup to counter Redlands big two-meter players. In the second quarter, the Aggies pulled ahead for good as they scored the only goal of the period to take a 3-2 halftime lead. Also in the second period, Wordes came up huge, stuffing a Redlands four-meter penalty shot to keep UC Davis up a goal.

UC Davis would add a pair of goals in the third period as it took a 5-3 lead into the final quarter before letting the defense take over. In the final three periods the Aggies defense did not allow a natural goal and they held Redlands to just two-for-seven in six-on-five situations.

In addition to McNeely's two scores, George Dingeldein, Tom Jay and Matt Jones each added a goal.

"Zach played huge in the cage for us today," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "He had a lot of saves and blocked a four-meter penalty shot that would have tied the game in the second quarter.

"Josh (McNeely) and Matt (Jones) both had solid games at both ends of the pool, contributing on offense and playing good defense," Doten continued. "Redlands has some big guys so we started all of our two-meter defenders. This was definitely a big win of us."

UC Davis will next be in action on September 26 at UC Santa Cruz. Gametime is set for 4pm.
