STANFORD, Calif. - Sophomores Trevor Allen and Chris Richardson each scored three goals to help 12th-ranked UC Davis battle to a 10-9 loss against No. 9 Long Beach State, then Richardson was one of three Aggie scorers in a 11-3 loss to UC San Diego to close out action at the NorCal Invitational men's water polo tournament at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center Sunday.

UC Davis finished 12th in the tournament, moving to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in Western Water Polo Association play.

Richardson converted a pair of 6-on-5 chances and Allen finished a counterattack in the first quarter against The Beach as the two teams locked horns in a 3-3 tie for the first eight minutes. However, the Aggies were held scoreless for the next 10 minutes: the 49ers completed two power plays and netted a natural goal to form a 6-3 halftime lead, then scored two more in a span of 16 seconds early in the third to extend their lead to five.

UC Davis drew a five-meter foul when a Long Beach player entered too soon after an exclusion. Richardson hit the ensuing penalty shot to bring the tally to 8-4 with 6:11 left in the third. But LBSU converted yet another extra-man opportunity near the end of the period, taking a 9-4 lead heading to the final frame.

Freshman Austin Beckwith drew another five-meter midway through the fourth quarter and Allen hit the shot, again reducing the 49er edge to four goals. LBSU had a rare 6-on-4 opportunity and could not take advantage, but did manage to score when the Aggies returned to a five-man defense, setting the board at 10-5.

UC Davis scored four straight goals down the final stretch to give chase against the 49ers, but simply ran out of time. Bernie Rogers, Hank Dickey and Colin Hicks each netted goals to trim the Long Beach lead to 10-8. Richardson assisted Allen on a goal with 17 seconds left to bring the final margin to a single goal.

Redshirt freshman Robert Clemons manned the cage for the Aggies, tallying eight saves with a steal. Dickey, a senior center, performed his job by drawing six exclusions in the game. However, UC Davis managed just 4-for-12 shooting on extra-man situations.

Somewhat attrited after the morning action with Long Beach, UC Davis played more of its second line against defending WWPA champ UC San Diego. Senior Jared Clapham drew a kickout and scored the 6-on-5 goal to draw first blood in the game, but the Tritons scored 10 unanswered through the third quarter.

The Aggies' 24-minute scoring drought ended when Anders MacCarthy drew an exclusion and Hicks assisted Kevin Meisel on the power-play goal with 6:45 left in the fourth. Richardson scored just 21 seconds later to bring the score to 10-3, but that proved to be the last of the UC Davis scoring.

Junior Josh Stiling and sophomore David Higginson each scored three goals to lead UCSD offensively.

UC Davis returns home to host the three-day, nine-team Aggie Shootout held at Schaal Aquatics Center from Sept. 21-23. The Aggies open the tournament against Cal Baptist at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
