LOS ANGELES, Calif. - No.16 UC Davis used a big third quarter to break open a tie game and come away with an 8-7 victory over No.15 University of the Pacific in the second round of the Southern California Men's Water Polo Tournament at the McDonald's Swim Stadium on the USC campus. In their first game of the day, the Aggies dropped a 19-7 decision against No.4 UC Berkeley.

With the split the Aggies' season record moves to 3-4.

In the nightcap the Aggies and UOP were tied at 4-4 entering the third period. But UC Davis outscored the Tigers 4-2 in the third and the defense made it stand up in the fourth, allowing just one goal to preserve the win. The Aggies were led by Patrick Jacobson, Michael Long and Tom Jay as each player scored two goals in the contest. Freshman goalie Mike McGee saved eight shots in the contest for the Aggies.

In the day's first game the Bears came out strong, taking a 6-2 first quarter lead and never looked back. In a rematch of last Sunday's contest at the Schaal Aquatic Center in which the Bears won 12-5, Cal was too strong as John Mann led the way with five goals while Brian Bacharach added three.

For the Aggies, Jacobson and Long each scored two goals while Matt Jones, Mark Miles and David Welch each added one.

"I'm very happy with how the team responded against Pacific," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "It was a tiring game against Cal and to come back and play a top team like Pacific was a good challenge. Our guys came out tough and after a close first half, they went on a run in the third.

"This marked the first time we have beaten UOP since I began coaching at UC Davis (in 2001) and our first win over a Mountain Pacific Conference team," Doten added.

Play concludes at the Southern California Tournament on Sunday as the Aggies face Loyola Marymount at 9:15 am.
