STANFORD, Calif. - Junior attacker Cory Lyle led the Aggies with three goals as UC Davis dropped both of its Sunday games to place 12th at the NorCal Invitational men's collegiate water polo tournament at Stanford's Belardi Pool. The 18th-ranked Aggies lost to No. 12 Santa Clara, 9-4, in its afternoon match; then lost to No. 17 UC San Diego by a 10-7 final in the tournament finale.

UC Davis, which was seeded 15th in the 16-team tournament, dips to 5-4 overall and 4-2 against Western Water Polo Association members.

Seven different Aggies scored one goal each in the evening loss to UCSD. Freshman Brian Donohoe led the Tritons with three goals, while Kneif Lohse added two. UCSD held a 6-2 lead at the halftime break but the Aggies outscored their opponent by a 5-4 edge after the intermission.

In Sunday's earlier action, Lyle scored two goals while seniors Jim Breen and Brendan Sigourney each added one, but UC Davis was unable to rally back from a 5-2 deficit in its loss to Santa Clara. Utilities Mike Sorgenfrei and Nicholas Poggetti each tallied two goals to lead the Broncos.

"I'd like to play more consistently for four quarters, like we did against Pacific [on Friday]," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "We've got a lot of work to do to get our guys in shape to handle the load of playing all four quarters for four games. But the guys handled it well. I know I have a talented group with a lot of potential. I think we all saw it this weekend."

Sophomore Kevin Peat tallied 13 saves in the loss to the Broncos. Saves were not tabulated in the nightcap, but junior Erik Quinn handled all four quarters of net duties for UC Davis.

The 11th-place game between UC San Diego and UC Davis took place out of sequence to allow another team to meet its travel arrangements. As a result, it was the last game played in the tournament, granting both teams an additional 80 minutes of rest.

The Aggies return to the Bay Area to compete in the Bronco Invitational on September 26 and 27. UC Davis will face four conference opponents, starting with a Saturday matchup with Cal Lutheran.
