SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Freshman Patrick Jacobson scored three goals to lead eight Aggies in the scoring column as UC Davis defeated LaVerne, 14-5, in a men's water polo match Saturday afternoon on the campus of UC Santa Cruz. Earlier in the day, Jacobson recorded three goals as the Aggies defeated Redlands for the second time in seven days with a 7-4 victory.
With the pair of wins, UC Davis moves to 7-1 on the season, including a seven-game winning streak. The Aggies also improve to 6-1 in Western Water Polo Association conference play.
The day began with UC Davis squaring off against Redlands. UC Davis had won all four games last weekend at the Redlands tournament, including a narrow 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs. In that game the Aggies needed two goals in the final 40 seconds to secure the win. Today, UC Davis jumped out to a 6-1 lead through three quarters then cruised to victory.
Jacobson led the way as he recorded his third multi-goal game of the season. It also marked the seventh straight game he has recorded at least one goal. Brook Rogers added two scores while Brian Combs and Dan Patry scored the remaining Aggie goals.
In the nightcap, it was Jacobson again leading the way as he scored another hat trick to lead eight different Aggies in the scoring column. He scored two goals in the second period as UC Davis broke open a close game to take an 8-3 halftime lead.
Combs added three goals against LaVerne while Rogers, who has scored in all eight games this season, added a pair of goals. George Dingeldein also scored a pair of goals while Jonathan Burke, Aaron Andrikopoulos, Aaron Schelegle and Patry all added scores in the victory.
"It was a good day and nice to get two wins," said Aggie Head Coach Steve Doten. "The team continues to improves, especially on the defensive end.
"We anticipated a tough rematch against Redlands and after a slow start, we were able to get everything together and our offense came alive," Doten continued. "It was a total team effort as we were able to get everyone involved. Pat (Jacobson) had an awesome game, helping on the counter-attack. He continues to get better each game."
Following the LaVerne game, Doten again praised his young squad.
"We came out well against LaVerne and opened it up in the second and third quarters. They have a unique style of play and once we had seen it a few times, we were able to make the necessary adjustments. Brian (Combs) did an excellent job of scoring from the perimeter tonight as they kept dropping men down."
UC Davis will next be in action on Sunday, September 22, when it faces the University of the Pacific in a noon start in Stockton.
