SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Junior Patrick Jacobson had four goals and freshman goalie Mike McGee made seven saves as No.15 UC Davis defeated Whittier in the second game of the 2004 SlugFest men's water polo tournament. In the day's first game freshman Nicholas Arrigo had three scores to lead the Aggies over host UC Santa Cruz, 12-6.
With the two wins the Aggies' see their season record improve to 6-5. It marks the first time since the opening game of the year the Aggies have a winning record.
In the day's first game, UC Davis broke open a 4-2 game at halftime by scoring six goals in the third period en route to the win over UC Santa Cruz. In addition to Arrigo's three goals, Jacobson, Kevin Bacharach and Aaron Schelege each added a pair of scores for the Aggies. McGee made nine saves in three periods of work while Nick Pauli played the fourth, making four saves.
In the nightcap, Jacobson scored four goals while sophomore David Welch added three as UC Davis pulled away from Whittier after the first period for the 13-9 win.
"In the Whittier match, we were happy with the win," Doten continued. "They gave us a challenge and it was a good game to come away with a win. At the end of the day I'm happy to get two wins against conference opponents."
Play concludes at the SlugFest on Sunday as the Aggies face Claremont and La Verne.
