SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Michael Long and Patrick Jacobson each had three goals to lead UC Davis to a 12-6 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Sunday's first game at the 2004 SlugFest men's water polo tournament. In Sunday's first game, UC Davis jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first and never looked back. The Aggies led 7-2 at halftime en route to the six-goal win. In addition to Long and Jacobson, Tom Jay added a pair of goals as seven Aggies in on scored in the contest. Mike McGee had two saves for UC Davis in the first half while freshman Stephen Sampson played the second, recording four saves.

In the nightcap, David Welch and Jay each scored two to pace UC Davis to the win over Western Water Polo Association foe La Verne. The Aggies started slow, trailing 5-4 at halftime, but opened the game up in the third as they outscored La Verne 4-0 in the period. Eight players scored in the contest as UC Davis went deep into its bench to receive contributions. McGee played the entire game in cage, making six saves.

"We came out well against Claremont and it was a good tune up as everyone got to play and we were able to work on certain things," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "Pat and Trevor did an excellent job for us and McGee played an excellent half, communicating well with his defense. Against La Verne, we came out okay but slipped up a little in the first half, letting them get the halftime lead. We had chances but didn't put our shots away. In the second half we poured it on and against got a lot of people playing time.

"Overall it was a good weekend to come away with four wins against conference opponents," Doten continued. "I'm not completely satisfied with out play, but the team can feel good about the wins and not we can build on that success as we prepare for this week against UC San Diego."

The Aggies return to the Schaal Aquatic Center this Thursday to host UC San Diego at 5 p.m.
