SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -
Senior George Dingeldein scored six goals on the day and the Aggies ran their winning streak to five straight as UC Davis defeated Whittier College, 11-5, and UC Santa Cruz, 7-5, during the first day of play at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest on Friday.
With the wins UC Davis improves to 5-2 on the season.
UC Davis opened the day against Whittier, defeating the Poets for the second time in a two-week span. Dingeldein paved the way as he scored three goals in the match, leading eight Aggies in the scoring column. Conor Duignan added a pair of goals for the Aggies, who jumped to a 6-2 halftime lead and never looked pack. Zach Wordes made four save in net for UC Davis while freshman Erik Acevedo added two saves while playing the fourth quarter.
In the second match of the day, the Aggies defeated host UC Santa Cruz by a 7-5 tally. Again it was Dingeldein leading the way as he scored three more goals while Tom Jay added two and Patrick Jacobson and David Welch each added a goal. The Aggies jumped out to a 7-2 lead before the Banana Slugs added three goals late in the contest. Wordes played the entire contest, recording nine saves in the game while sparking the Aggie defense. UC Davis did not allow a natural goal until three minutes remained in the contest, shutting down the UC Santa Cruz offensive attack.
"The team has really come together the last two weeks," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "We started great in both games and our defense against Santa Cruz was great. I'm really happy with the way the team played today.
"Tomorrow we have two very big games against BYU-Hawaii and Air Force. They are going to be the toughest tests of the weekend but I think we are going to be ready for it."
Play at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest continues with two games on Saturday and two more on Sunday.
