SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Senior Brian Combs scored two goals and junior goalie Zach Wordes recorded a season-best 13 saves as UC Davis defeated host UC Santa Cruz, 5-4, Friday afternoon on the campus of UC Santa Cruz.
With the win, the Aggies improve to 8-2 on the season and move to 7-1 against Western Water Polo Association opponents.
UC Santa Cruz jumped on top early as it led 1-0 following the first quarter. But UC Davis went on the offensive as it scored four goals in the second period to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.
The Banana Slugs cut that margin in half by scoring the only goal of the third period then both teams added a single goal in the fourth to close out the scoring. For UC Davis it marked the eighth win in its last nine games.
"We got off to a slow start but really picked it up in the second period," said Aggie Head Coach Steve Doten. "We led most of the game but Santa Cruz never gave up and kept fighting to the end. Our defense continued to play well, giving up only one goal when both teams were at full strength.
"Zach (Wordes) had a great day, without a doubt the MVP of the game," Doten continued. "He made a lot of key blocks at very important times to keep us in the lead.
UC Davis will next be in action when it competes in the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest this Saturday and Sunday. The first game Saturday morning will be against Air Force.
