DAVIS, Calif. - Junior Trevor Allen scored three goals while veterans Chris Richardson, Teddy Nicholson and Bernie Rogers added two each to lead 13th-ranked UC Davis from a 7-3 deficit to an 11-7 win over No. 18 Redlands to close out first-day action at the Aggie Shootout at Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday. The Aggies opened their tourney with a 14-4 loss to No. 4 California in the morning.
UC Davis moves to 4-6 for the season.
Nicholson hit both goals in the first half against the Bulldogs but the Aggies went to the halftime break with a 6-3 loss. David Sekula collected an assist from Clint Freeman at two meters to bump the Redlands lead to 7-3 on the opening possession of the third quarter, but that proved to be the last of the 'Dogs scoring. Richardson converted a 6-on-5 chance at the 4:40 mark to end an 11-minute scoreless stretch for UC Davis. Rogers converted an assist from Austin Beckwith a minute later to complete another power play, freshman Tennyson May hit a shot from outside with 2:56 left then Alex Bagdasarian popped a goal from set at the 1:24 mark to complete the Aggies' 4-0 run in the third.
UC Davis continued to lock down on defense in the fourth while converting its chances at two meters. A Beckwith steal near the Redlands cage led to an Allen alley-oop goal on the other end, setting the score at 8-7 and giving the Aggies their first lead since midway in the first. Richardson added his team's ninth goal on a crosscage shot two minutes later, then Allen made it 10-7 on a long lob from the two spot with 3:44 to go. Nicholson helped seal the game with his field block against RU sophomore Quinn Curl with less than a minute remaining, and Rogers added an insurance goal with 20 tick left
The Aggies shot 11-for-30 in the win over Redlands, a marked improvement over the 4-for-37 offense in the loss to the Golden Bears.
Jacob Ley highlighted UC Davis action with his two goals. Cal jumped out to four unanswered in the first quarter, then made it 5-0 early in the second before Richardson put the Aggies on the board with an exclusion goal. Ley hit a buzzer-beater to close out the first half and scored on a 6-on-5 from two meters early in the fourth. Allen also scored for UC Davis, delivering from outside with less than a minute left in the third.
Aggie goalkeepers Philip Bates and Zach Tudhope split up net duties evenly. Bates tallied six saves in his first half of work against Cal, then four in his start against Redlands. Tudhope relieved Bates in the second half of each game. He stopped five shots versus the Golden Bears, including three on power plays; then blocked another five in the comeback run on the Bulldogs.
UC Davis hosts Fresno Pacific at 11:30 in Sunday's portion of the tournament. Redlands, which battled Cal early before falling by a 20-8 final in Saturday's neutral-site contest, will take on Santa Clara and FPU on Sunday.
