DAVIS, Calif. -
Four Aggies scored hat tricks to help No. 13 UC Davis ride a 10-1 start to a 19-7 win over Fresno Pacific on the second day of action at the Aggie Shootout men's water polo tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.
The Aggies improve to 5-6 for the year.
Junior Chris Richardson, sophomore Alex Bagadasarian, freshman Max Vigeant and freshman Zoltan Lazar each netted three goals in the win. Junior center Teddy Nicholson added another two while Tennyson May, Trevor Allen, Michael Wright, Jacob Ley and Evan MacCarthy tallied one apiece.
For FPU, junior Zlatko Vlasic and freshman Kyle Madel scored two goals each.
Richardson was the first to three, scoring on a 6-on-5 chance midway through the first quarter then converted two assists from senior Bernie Rogers in the second. Bagdasarian scored his first goal at the first-half buzzer in unlikely fashion. He briefly bobbled a pass then regained control just soon enough to slip one off Sunbird goalkeeper Jake Finney's hands as time expired. Bags then bookended the third quarter with goals at 7:04 and 0:44.
Vigeant and Lazar both scored all of their goals after the Aggies' 9-1 halftime lead. Vigeant converted power plays in each of the third and fourth quarters. Lazar connected from the perimeter at the 5:58 mark in the third, another as time expired in that frame, then completed his hat trick with 1:49 left in the game.
Richardson's three goals lifts his total to 129, moving him into eighth in school history. He needs three to tie Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Pat Foster for seventh.
UC Davis hosts its alumni game on Saturday, Oct. 5 then returns to action at the SoCal Invitational at UC Irvine a week later.
