SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Senior Brian Combs scored five goals to lead UC Davis to three victories this past weekend at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest men's water polo tournament.

The tournament began with an, 8-6, overtime loss against Air Force. Freshman Patrick Jacobson put the Aggies up early with a first quarter score then goals by Brook Rogers, George Dingeldein and Jacobson again gave UC Davis a 4-2 halftime lead. Air Force would even the score by the end of regulation at 6-6 then outscore the Aggies 3-1 in the overtime period to come away with the victory.

UC Davis rebounded against Whittier in its next match as they outscored the Poets, 8-4. Eight different Aggies recorded goals in the contest. UC Davis closed out the first day of play with a 7-3 victory over Claremont. Combs led the way as he scored three goals while Aaron Andrikopoulos added a pair. Freshman Kris Husted also scored his first goal of the season for the Aggies.

In Sunday's first match, the Aggies made it three in a row as they defeated Pomona-Pitzer, 9-5. Andrikopoulos and Rogers each had a pair of goals to lead the way. In the tournament's final match, UC Davis dropped a 15-1 decision to UC San Diego. Junior Jamie Turpen scored the Aggies lone goal in the contest as UC Davis was shutout over the final three periods.

"It was a tough weekend. Now is the time in the season when guys start to breakdown a little bit and we just have to push through it," said Aggie Head Coach Steve Doten. "We didn't play our best water polo because of that, but we found a way to win four matches over the weekend (including Friday's win over UC Santa Cruz) and that is a positive.

"The weekend was also good from the standpoint that everyone got a chance to play and it was really our first chance to evaluate the entire team."

Following the weekend, UC Davis improved its season record to 11-4, including an 11-3 mark against Western Water Polo Association opponents.

UC Davis will next be in action this Saturday when it competes in the two-day NorCal Tournament in Berkeley.
