STOCKTON, Calif. - Patrick Jacobson and Nicholas Arrigo each had three goals as No.14 UC Davis defeated No.15 Navy 11-10 in the 9th-place game of the 20004 NorCal men's water polo tournament Sunday afternoon at Delta College. Earlier in the day the Aggies' dropped a 10-9 overtime decision against No.11 Princeton.
With the split on Sunday the Aggies season record now stands at 10-9.
Against Princeton the Aggies came out strong, taking a 5-3 lead by halftime. The offense disappeared in the third period as the Tigers outscored UC Davis, 3-0, to take a 6-5 lead into the fourth. The Aggies forced overtime by scoring three goals in the fourth, but in the extra period Princeton outscored UC Davis 2-1 for the narrow win.
The Aggies were led by Jacobson's two goals while seven other Aggies reached the scoring column. In goal, freshman Mike McGee made 10 saves.
In the nightcap, the Aggies held a 6-5 lead at the half and led 9-7 going into the final period before scoring two more goals to secure the win. In addition to Jacobson and Arrigo, David Welch added a pair of goals as UC Davis secured ninth place in the tournament. Freshman Stephen Sampson went the distance in net for the Aggies, making four saves.
UC Davis is next in action on Friday when it hosts the University of the Pacific at the Schaal Aquatic Center. Gametime is set for 5 p.m.
