PALO ALTO, Calif. - Sophomore Tom Jay scored the winning goal with less than a minute to play as No.18 UC Davis defeated Queens College 6-5 in the 11th-place game at the NorCal Men's Water Polo Tournament Sunday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center.

Earlier in the day the Aggies dropped an 8-4 contest against No.10 UC Santa Barbara. With the split UC Davis improves to 9-6 on the season.

With the score tied 4-4 entering the fourth period, UC Davis went ahead with 4:05 remaining following a goal by freshman David Welch. Three minutes later Queens would tie it up on a goal by Haldun Toygarli setting the stage for Jay. With :30 remaining, Jay scored his second goal of the contest to give UC Davis the final margin of victory.

Sophomore Conor Duignan added two goals in the game with Matt Jones also scored for the Aggies. Goalie Zach Wordes recorded four saves in the game.

In the day's first game, No.10 UC Santa Barbara raced to a 4-1 lead in the first period and never looked back in registering the 8-4 win over UC Davis. It marked the second victory of the season for the Gauchos over the Aggies.

With the score tied 1-1, the Gauchos scored three straight and then extended the lead to 7-2 with 3:40 left in the third period. Jay scored a pair of goals for UC Davis while George Dingeldein and Patrick Jacobson added the two other scores for the Aggies. Wordes registered 11 saves in the contest.

UC Davis will next be in action on October 11 when it travels to face California. Gametime is set for 10am.
