Aggies Hang Tough Against No. 3 Bruins

DAVIS, Calif. - Sophomore Chris Richardson scored four goals while local products Trevor Allen and Teddy Nicholson each added two to account for 17th-ranked UC Davis' offense in a 15-8 loss to No. 3 UCLA in men's collegiate water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies move to 11-9 for the season. The Bruins improve to 17-2.

Richardson scored all four of his goals in the second half, helping UC Davis fight back from an 8-1 halftime deficit. Junior goalkeeper Tony Dito tallied eight saves, including one on a counterattack and another on a power play.

For UCLA, freshman Danny McClintick and junior Aimone Barabino each netted three goals. Griffin White and Josh Samuels added two apiece.

The Aggies drew first blood when Allen barred-in a goal less than two minutes into the contest. That becaome the lone UC Davis goal in the first half, however, as McClintick and Barabino each added two scores in a run of eight unanswered.

Richardson led the second-half charge immediately out of the gates. He drew a five-meter foul on the opening possession of the third quarter, then promptly hit the penalty shot. He then drew an exclusion, setting up a 6-on-5 goal by Allen with 4:31 to go. Richardon also hit a power-play goal from long range at the 2:45 mark and posted a big field block against UCLA defender Chris Wednt on the next possession.

The Aggie sophomore assisted Nicholson's goal out of two meters just 27 seconds into the fourth, then scored the penalty shot after Anders MacCarthy drew another five-meter foul, helping cut the Bruin lead to 10-6. But UC Davis never closed the gap by less than four the rest of the way, as UCLA exploded for a 5-1 run during the next six minutes of play.



Nicholson completed a strong 6-on-5 effort with 47 seconds remaining to bring the score to its final tally of 15-8.

In all, UC Davis drew 12 exclusions and scored on three. UCLA had seven power plays, converting four.

The Aggies return to action for a rare out-of-state game, traveling to Air Force for Western Water Polo Association action on Saturday. Game time is noon Pacific.
