USAFA, Colo. - Sophomore Trevor Allen scored a career-high four goals but 17th-ranked UC Davis was unable to overcome an early deficit in falling 15-11 to 13th-ranked Air Force in a Western Water Polo Association men's game at the Cadet Natatorium Saturday.

The Aggies slip to 11-10 overall and 10-3 in WWPA contests. The Falcons improve to 8-6 for the year and 7-2 in conference play. The contest largely determined the two teams' relative seeding at the conference championship in November, as Air Force had claimed a neutral-site win earlier in the season.

Besides Allen's scoring, sophomore Teddy Nicholson added two goals while Jared Chapham, Hank Dickey, Colin Hicks, Anders MacCarthy and Bernie Rogers each chipped in one. Junior Tony Dito posted two first-half saves before giving way to freshman Philip Bates, who made five stops in his collegiate debut.

Senior Brad Rajchel scored four first-half goals to lead the Falcons offensively. Junior and Davis High product Max Reilly netted a hat trick with three other AFA players recording two goals each. Senior goalie Mike Fish tallied eight saves.

The Academy never trailed in the contest, taking a quick 2-0 lead on natural goals by Rajchel and Andrew Hamilton. Nicholson hit a 6-on-5 goal to put UC Davis on the board with 4:47 left in the first, then scored on the opening possession of the second quarter to bring the proceedings to 4-2. Allen hit his first goal with 5:26 in the second to cut the Falcon lead to 4-3, but Air Force scored five of the next six in crafting a 9-4 halftime lead.

The Aggies rallied again early after the break, with Allen and senior Colin Hicks scoring successive goals to trim the deficit to 9-6. Air Force answered with a Reilly goal at the 5:06 mark and Jantz Johnson penalty shot to restore the lead to five with 4:13 to go.

Allen and Dickey each scored in the final minutes to bring UC Davis back to within three, but the Aggies never approached any closer. The Falcons scored three unanswered during the first five minutes of the final quarter, sealing the victory.

UC Davis has three more conference dates before the WWPA tournament: Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego at home on Oct. 26 and Nov. 1, respectively; plus a road game at Santa Clara on November 11. The Aggies return to action in a home contest with Pepperdine on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
