DAVIS, Calif. - Patrick Jacobson scored four goals and No.14 UC Davis jumped out to a 9-1 lead en route to an 11-4 win over Santa Clara in a men's Western Water Polo Association match Saturday afternoon at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
With the win the Aggies improve to 12-9 overall, 9-4 in WWPA action while Santa Clara falls to 8-13.
UC Davis opened the scoring with two and a half minutes to play in the first as Conor Duignan beat Bronco goalie Peter Moore for his 17th goal of the season. Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz had the equalizer for Santa Clara just over a minute later, but Jacobson scored with :02 left in the first to make it 2-1 Aggies.
Jacobson's goal ignited an 8-0 UC Davis run that lasted until late in the third when Charlie Moore stopped the run with his only goal of the contest. In that stretch Jacobson added three more scores while David Welch put in two and Duignan scored his second of the day.
In net, freshman Mike McGee went the first half for UC Davis, making four saves while allowing just one goal. Nick Pauli played the third, making one save while Stephen Sampson played the fourth and registered three saves. Peter Moore had seven saves in net for Santa Clara.
"This was the first time we have faced Santa Clara this year so I am happy with the result," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "They beat us last season so we knew we could not overlook this game.
"We have been working on some new things lately and they guys made it work today," Doten continued. "Now we have to turn our attention to tomorrow, which will be another good experience for our team."
UC Davis continues its busy weekend on Sunday with games against No.2 Stanford and No.1 UCLA. The Stanford contests begins at noon with the UCLA match beginning at 5pm.
