Aggies Finish 14th at NorCal Tournament

Oct. 6, 2002

BERKELEY, Calif. - UC Davis men's water polo team finished in 14th place following two days of competition at the NorCal Men's Water Polo Tournament, October 5-6, hosted by UC Berkeley. The Aggies record now stands at 12-7 on the season.

The No.19 Aggies began the tournament against No.4 Pacific, and dropped a 14-1 contest to the Tigers. Senior Brook Rogers was the only Aggie able to get on the board when he scored in the second period while goalkeeper Zach Wordes made eight saves in the net. It was the second meeting of the season between the northern California schools, with UOP winning that contest, 13-4.

In Saturday's afternoon contest, the Aggies faced No. 14 Princeton, with the Tigers coming away with the 14-4 victory. The game was close in the early stages as Princeton held on to a 3-2 lead through the first period. But the Tigers opened it up in the middle two periods, outscoring the Aggies 10-1 and taking a 13-3 lead into the final eight minutes. The two teams would each add a goal in the fourth period for the final 14-4, score. Rogers led UC Davis with a pair of goals while Tom Jay and Brian Combs each added a score. Wordes made 11 saves in the cage.

The Aggies began Sunday by exacting some revenge from a week earlier as it defeated Air Force, 7-6, to advance to the 13th place match. The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period and held a 3-1 edge at halftime. But UC Davis rallied in the second half, scoring three goals in each of the final two quarters to take the victory. Combs led the way with a pair of goals, while Rogers, Jay, Patrick Jacobson, Aaron Schelegle and George Dingeldein all added a goal. Wordes recorded 12 saves in net. UC Davis avenged an 8-6, overtime loss to Air Force in late September at the UC Santa Cruz Slugfest.

In the 13th place match later on Sunday, UC Davis dropped a close, 6-5 contest to Harvard. The Aggies jumped out early, taking a 5-3 lead at the half. But playing their fourth game in two days caught up to the Aggies as Harvard scored the only three goals of the second half to pull out the victory. Freshman Conor Duignan led UC Davis with two goals, while Combs, Rogers and Jamie Turpen all added a score. Wordes recorded seven saves in the match.

UCLA defeated USC in the title match, 6-3, while Stanford defeated UC Irvine, 9-6, for third place.
