DAVIS, Calif. - Matt Jones scored with fourteen seconds remaining to break an 8-8 tie and lift No.15 UC Davis to the 9-8 victory over No.17 Santa Clara in a men's Western Water Polo Association match Saturday afternoon at Hickey Pool.
With the win the Aggies improve to 10-9 on the season while the Broncos fall to 13-9.
Santa Clara got on the board first with the only score of the opening quarter when Daniel Figoni beat Aggie goalie Zach Wordes with 1:30 remaining. The Aggies tied it in the second on a goal by freshman David Welch, his first of three on the day, then took the lead when senior George Dingeldein scored the first of his three goals two minutes later. Dingeldein added a second with 10 seconds remaining in the second period to give the Aggies a 3-2 lead heading into halftime.
In the third period the Aggies would twice extend the lead to two on goals by Tom Jay and Welch, but each time the Broncos fought back as Kevin Starry added a pair and Figoni recorded his second, a four-meter goal, to tie the game at 5-5 at the end of three quarters.
In the fourth period both teams turned up the scoring as three times the Aggies took the lead with Santa Clara countering each score with a goal of its own. With the score tied at 8-8 with 34 seconds remaining, Santa Clara's Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz was called for a foul, giving UC Davis a 6-on-5 advantage for the next 20 seconds. Just as Flanagan-De La Hoz was waived back in, Jones scored his only goal of the contest for the final margin of victory.
Welch and Dingeldein ended the game with three goals each while Jay added a pair and Jones recorded one. Wordes registered six saves in net for the Aggies.
"I'm really proud of the way the guys played," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "As the season goes along other coaches start to figure you out. So I have to ask different guys to step up and we did a little of that today, which is good to see."
Santa Clara was paced by Figoni, who scored three goals on the afternoon, while Starry registered two and Brizgys, Flanagan-De La Hoz and Sho Yamazaki each added one. Peter Moore recorded eight saves in the Bronco net.
UC Davis will next be in action on Sunday when they travel to Palo Alto to face No.4 Stanford. Gametime is set for noon.
