PALO ALTO, Calif. - Tony Azevedo scored four goals and Mike Derse added three to lead the fourth-ranked Stanford men's water polo team to a 13-3 victory over No.15 UC Davis in a non-conference game Sunday at the Avery Aquatic Center.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 10-10 on the season while the Cardinal improve to 11-3.
It was a closely contested game in the first period as the Aggies held the dangerous Cardinal to just one goal. Stanford would add three more in the second to take a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.
UC Davis would not get on the board until two minutes into the third period when senior George Dingeldein broke through for his only goal of the contest. Stanford scored the final three goals of the period to take an 8-1 lead into the fourth quarter.
"We came out well to start the game and I think frustrated Stanford a little in the first quarter," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. We played good defense and the guys played tough, but it's hard to hold Stanford down for an entire game. Their experience and training really showed in the second half.
"I thought Zach played a great game for us in the cage and came up with some big saves," Doten continued. "Josh also played great defensively for us against one of the best teams in the nation."
UC Davis will next be in action on Friday when it hosts Brown University as part of the three-day Davis Shootout. The game will be played at Solano College in Fairfield beginning at 3:30 p.m.
