DAVIS, Calif. -
Sophomore Marko Madaras and senior Stephen Loomis each scored four goals to help eighth-ranked Pepperdine break loose from an early 2-2 tie to take a 19-9 win over No. 16 UC Davis in men's collegiate water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Friday night.
The Aggies fall to 11-11 for the year. The Waves improve to 9-6 overall.
Senior Colin Hicks posted three goals to lead UC Davis while sophomores Trevor Allen and Chris Richardson each netted two. Jared Clapham and Teddy Nicholson also hit goals out of two meters to round out the Aggie scoring. Freshman Philip Bates made his first collegiate start at goalkeeper. He finished with four saves, including a block against Nick Cooper's five-meter penalty shot.
Hicks helped UC Davis claim a 2-1 lead during the first five minutes of play. He finished a 6-on-5 chance midway through the opening quarter then converted an assist from Hank Dickey at the 2:48 mark. The Aggies had an opportunity to extend their lead even further after drawing another exclusion at the 1:50 mark but both shots caromed off the cage. Madaras fired in a skip shot from the two spot to equalize in the final minute of the first quarter.
Pepperdine then exploded offensively, outscoring its host by a 5-1 margin in the second quarter to take a 7-3 lead. Madaras had two goals in that frame, hitting his power-play goal at the 6:14 mark and finishing a counterattack with 1:36 to go. UC Davis' lone goal in the second came from Clapham who fired in a pass from Matt Vowell to cut the Waves' lead to 4-3 with 5:30 remaining.
Both teams clashed for an offensive shootout in the third period. Pepperdine shot 7-for-10 in that period, including two goals on five-meter penalties and two more on exclusions. The Aggies recovered from their second-quarter shooting woes with four goals in the third: Richardson scored on a 6-on-5 then hit a penalty shot, while Allen popped two goals from the left wing.
The Waves added five more goals in the fourth while the Aggies bookended that run with goals. Nicholson scored in heavy traffic down low to open the quarter, Hicks completed his hat trick with an outside shot with a second remaining.
UC Davis finished the game with 9-for-35 shooting while Pepperdine hit 19 of 31 for the contest.
The Aggies return to tournament action at Santa Clara's Rodeo, where they will face Fresno Pacific on Saturday followed by Brown and Bucknell on Sunday.
