SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sixteenth-ranked UC Davis fell to two Top 20 teams to close out Sunday action at the Rodeo tournament at Santa Clara's Sullivan Aquatic Center. The Aggies lost their morning matchup with No. 12 Brown by a 10-6 final, then had their early 4-2 lead wither to a 14-6 setback against No. 17 Bucknell in their afternoon tilt.
UC Davis moves to 12-13 for the weekend.
Senior Matt Vowell scored a total of four goals for the day, including three in the nightcap to the Bison. Senior Anders MacCarthy and sophomore Chris Richardson each scored two goals against the Bears, while sophomore Trevor Allen tallied a goal in each contest.
The Aggies fell into a 5-1 hole within the first five minutes of play against Brown, and trailed by a 7-2 margin midway through the second period. Allen hit his lone goal in the final minute before halftime to set the Bears lead at 7-3 at the break. Center Svetozar Stefanovic hit a 6-on-5 goal as part of his hat trick to nudge the lead to five on the opening possession of the third quarter, then MacCarthy scored on a power play at the 2:24 mark to bring the tally to 8-4 through three quarters.
Richardson and Vowell also converted 6-on-5 chances in the fourth to close the gap to 8-6 with 5:30 remaining in the fourth, but UC Davis failed to score the rest of the way.
Vowell exploded for three goals in the first quarter against Bucknell, spotting the Aggies a 4-2 lead at the 3:31 mark. However junior defender Mike Kimble and freshman attacker Stefan Aleksic quickly equalized, igniting an 11-0 run that lasted well into the third period. Kimble tallied four first-half goals to pace the Bison to an 11-4 halftime edge, Aleksic's fourth goal set the board at 12-4 with 5:24 in the third, and Julian Colina's goal made it 13-4 a minute later.
Sophomore center Teddy Nicholson ended the UC Davis scoring drought with his natural goal with 2:04 remaining in the third. Bernie Rogers scored on the next trip down to bring the score to 13-6, but the Aggies were held scoreless for the entirety of the fourth.
UC Davis hosts a three-game homestand, beginning with Friday's matchup against Western Water Polo Association leader Loyola Marymount. Game time is 6 p.m. at Schaal Aquatics Center.
