FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Jamie Turpen scored three goals to lead seven different Aggies in the scoring column as UC Davis defeated Brown University, 10-4, in the first game of the 2003 Davis Shootout Men's Water Polo tournament Friday afternoon at Solano College.

With the win the Aggies improve to 11-10 on the season while the Bears fall to 8-8.

UC Davis got on the board first when freshman Brian Hodgens scored his only goal of the contest just under three minutes into the game. Kevin Bacharach and Turpen would each add goals in the period as UC Davis took a 3-0 lead into the second quarter. The lead would grow to 4-0 after another Turpen goal before Sean Tiner put Brown on the scoreboard with the first of his two goals on the afternoon with just over one minute left in the half. UC Davis closed out the second period on a David Welch goal to take a 5-1 lead into halftime.

In the second half the Aggies increased their lead to 10-2 with 3:50 left in the fourth period. Turpen added his third goal in the third quarter while Patrick Jacobson, George Dingeldein, Kellen Trimlett and Welch accounted for the other UC Davis scored. Tiner added his second goal in the third quarter and Andy Wiener added two goals in the fourth to close out the scoring. The highlight of the day for Brown came in the final minute of play when goalie Jay Fantone, who recorded 12 saves on the game, stopped back-to-back four-meter penalty shots within 20 seconds of each other, giving the Brown bench reason to cheer.

"We had a good week of practice and it's nice to see it carry over to the first game of the Davis Shootout," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "This is a big event for us and the kids really want to do well. It was a nice start and gets us on the right foot heading into a very big weekend."

Play at the Davis Shootout continues on Saturday beginning at 11:30 a.m. UC Davis will face Santa Clara in its only action on Saturday at 12:45. All game will be played at Solano College in Fairfield.
