Aggies Defeat Santa Clara In Second Match At Davis Shootout

FAIRFIELD, Calif. - Tom Jay scored three goals and the Aggies shutout the Broncos in the fourth quarter as UC Davis defeated Santa Clara, 7-5, in the second game of the 2003 Davis Shootout Men's Water Polo tournament Saturday afternoon at Solano College.

With the win the Aggies improve to 12-10 on the season.

Kevin Starry put Santa Clara on the board first just over one minute into the contest when he score the first of his two goals on the day. Aggie freshman David Welch tied it at 1-1 at the 2:11 mark and the score would remain tied through the opening period. The Aggies outscored Santa Clara 3-2 in the second period on goals by Jay, George Dingeldein and Kevin Bacharach to take a 4-3 lead into halftime.

Santa Clara would outscore UC Davis 2-1 in the third period on goals by Logan Gee and Kenny Flanagan De La Hoz, making it 5-5 going into the final quarter. Senior Jamie Turpen put UC Davis ahead for good with 2:18 left by scoring his only goal of the contest. Jay would seal the win with 27 seconds remaining for the final margin of victory.

Freshman Erik Acevedo started in the cage for UC Davis, registering four first-half saves. Zach Wordes played the second half and made three saves. Santa Clara's Peter Moore played the entire game in net for the Broncos, making six saves.

In the day's first game, Brandon Borso and Jonathan Hopkins each recorded hat tricks to lead seven Triton players in the scoring column as UC San Diego defeated Brown 12-3. The Tritons, ranked No.5 nationally, held a 5-0 lead after then first period and never looked back as Brown would no closer than 7-3 late in the third period. UC San Diego would score the final five goals of the contest to seal the win. Colin McElroy made 10 saves in the Triton net while Jay Fantone saves six shots for Brown and Keith Stanski made one.

 

 

In game No.4, it was all Tritons as eight different players scored, including a hat trick from Matt Ellis, as UC San Diego defeated UC Santa Cruz 13-4. After a close first period in which the Tritons held a 2-1 lead, San Diego exploded for six goals in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. All three of Ellis' goals came in that second period. McElroy made four saves in the Triton cage while Bryan Corbett and David Miller each recorded one. For UC Santa Cruz, four different players each scored a goal with Joe Lyons making four saves in net, Scott Vaughn three and Cameron Jouras two for the Banana Slugs.

Game No.5 saw Santa Clara's Daniel Figoni record eight goals to lift the Broncos to an 11-5 victory over Brown. Figoni scored five of his goals in 6-on-5 situations as Brown was called for 12 ejections on the contest. In addition to Figoni, Jon Greco, Flanagan-De La Hoz and Whit Gilfillan each scored goals for the Broncos. Brown was led by Sean Tiner's two goals while Thomas Payton, Doug Grutzmacher and Andy Wiener each scored.

In the day's final game, Tiner scored four goals and Payton added three as Brown captured its first game of the shootout with an 11-7 victory over UC Santa Cruz. It was a 2-2 game after the first quarter before Brown scored five second-period goals to take a 7-5 lead into halftime. The Bears added two more goals in the third to take a 9-5 lead into the final period, a lead they would not surrender. Brian King and Toby Magree each scored three goals to pace UC Santa Cruz in the contest.

Play at the Davis Shootout continues on Sunday beginning at 8 a.m. UC Davis will face UC Santa Cruz at 8 a.m. and then UC San Diego at 12:30 p.m. All game will be played at Solano College in Fairfield.
