SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Junior Chris Richardson scored a hat trick in a 13-3 win over Cal Baptist while senior Bernie Rogers and sophomore Austin Beckwith each had two in an 8-7 victory over Bucknell, helping UC Davis sweep its Saturday competition against Top 20 opponents at the Rodeo men's water polo tournament, hosted by Santa Clara.

The No. 11 Aggies improve to 9-10 for the year. CBU and Bucknell ranked 17th and 18th in Wednesday national coaches' poll, respectively.

Besides Richardson's three goals against the Lancers, juniors Teddy Nicholson and Trevor Allen each added two in the victory, helping UC Davis pull away from a 4-2 halftime edge. Richardon hit a 6-on-5 goal in the first quarter, hit the penalty shot after a five-meter foul in the third, then scored a natural goal two minutes in the fourth.

Sophomore Philip Bates also played a key role in shutting down the CBU attack. He tallied 15 saves against the Lancers before adding another nine in the nightcap.

In contrast to the morning contest, the Aggies stormed to a commanding lead in the first half, then held off the charging Bison after the break. Beckwith put UC Davis on the board midway through the first frame before Mike Kimble equalized for BU two minutes later. Nicholson hit an even-strength goal in the final seconds of that quarter, igniting a 5-1 run that set the Aggies ahead to a 6-2 halftime lead.

Jack Else hit a five-meter for the Bison early in the third quarter then Aggie freshman Jacob Ley restored the margin to four goals at the 3:08 mark. However, Bucknell scored four of the next five in the contest. UC Davis never surrendered the lead, with Beckwith's goal at 6:49 in the fourth proving to be the game-winner.

The Rodeo tournament continues through Sunday. The Aggies take on No. 19 Harvard at 8 a.m. then face No. 20 Brown for the 10:40 match.
