COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Charles Horn, Kirk Reimer and Murphey Morgan each scored three goals as Air Force used a big third quarter to defeat UC Davis, 12-7, in a men's water polo match Saturday evening on the opening day of the Air Force Tournament.
With the loss, UC Davis falls to 13-9 on the season, and will continue play at the Air Force Tournament on Sunday with games against UC Santa Cruz and Cal Baptist.
After Air Force scored the opening goal, the Aggies took their only lead of the game at 2-1 in the first quarter. The Cadets would end the period scoring the final three goals, the last two by Eric Baber to take a 4-2 lead after the opening eight minutes. The two teams would each score a pair of goals in the second to give Air Force a 6-4, halftime lead.
In the third period, Air Force increased its lead by outscoring the Aggies, 4-2, to end the third leading 10-6. The Cadets would add a pair of goals in the fourth while UC Davis managed one to close out the scoring at 12-7.
"We played hard all four quarters and I'm very happy with that," said Aggie Head Coach Steve Doten. "We were more physical and more intense than in our opening win against George Washington, we just came up short.
"We put ourselves in a tough spot falling behind in the third quarter and we need to do a better job on our man-up situations. But I was impressed with how we competed."
