DAVIS, Calif. - Patrick Jacobson scored four goals and the Aggies used a 7-1 burst midway through the contest as No.14 UC Davis defeated No.13 BYU-Hawaii, 9-4, in a Western Water Polo Association men's water polo contest Thursday evening at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
With the win the Aggies improve to 13-11 while the Seasiders fall to 10-3.
Aggie sophomore Michael Long opened the scoring by converting a penalty shot late in the first period for a 1-0 lead. Vlada Stankovic gave BYUH the equalizer moments later as the first period ended in a 1-1 tie. The Seasiders took their only lead of the contest less than two minutes into the second quarter when Vanja Kalabic converted for his only score of the game. Just over a minute later Conor Duignan tied the game, igniting a 7-1 run that lasted into the fourth period.
Goals by Jacobson and Tom Jay pushed the lead to 4-2 before Stankovic ended the half with his second goal of the contest, making it a 4-3 Aggie lead at halftime.
In the third UC Davis outscored the Seasiders 3-0 as another penalty shot from Long and goals from Jacobson and David Welch stretched the lead to 7-3. Jacobson added two more goals in the fourth as UC Davis pulled away for the victory.
"I am very happy with our performance tonight," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten. "We came out a little slow, but then we got it going in the second. Our game plan was to go full throttle and keep the tempo high. We have a lot of confidence in our depth and we were able to play our style of game. It's a good start to the weekend."
Jacobson's four goals gives him 53 for the season, tying him for 10th place on the Aggies' single-season goals scoring list with Dave Schauer.
UC Davis returns to the pool on Saturday when it competes in the Aggie Shootout. Play begins at 8 a.m. at Schaal Aquatics Center.
