LA JOLLA, Calif. - Sophomore driver Josh Stiling and senior Graham Saber each scored three goals to help 11th-ranked UC San Diego pull away to a 10-6 win over 12th-ranked UC Davis in a Western Water Polo Association men's matchup at Canyonview Aquatic Center Friday evening.
The Aggies slip to 20-7 for the season and 11-3 in conference games. The Tritons improve to 12-7 overall and 11-3 in WWPA play.
Senior Walter Eggert led UC Davis with three goals, all before the halftime break. Chris Richardson, Colin Hicks and Trevor Allen each added one. Eggert scored two of his goals within a 50-second span in the first quarter to send the Aggies to a 3-1 lead, but Stiling and Butler each netted a score to even things at 3-3 by the three-minute mark in the frame. The Tritons had three 6-on-5 opportunities but could not convert on any.
Butler put UCSD ahead at 6:28 in the second with a natural goal, Hicks equalized two minutes later, then the Tritons converted back-to-back exclusion opportunities to build a 7-5 halftime lead. Although Allen's 6-on-5 goal cut the deficit to one, the Aggies never managed to even the tally. UCSD held its guest scoreless the rest of the way.
UC Davis was unable to convert seven 6-on-5 chances in that final stretch.
The Aggies continue a key WWPA weekend with a match at Loyola Marymount on Sunday.
