COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Junior Jamie Turpen scored three goals while three other Aggies added two goals each as UC Davis defeated UC Santa Cruz, 13-8, in the third game at the Air Force Men's Water Polo Tournament Sunday in the Cadet Gymnasium Natatorium. Later in the day, the Aggies dropped a 9-5 contest against Cal Baptist.

With the split, UC Davis goes to 14-10 on the season.

UC Davis began the day by coming out strong against UC Santa Cruz, scoring six goals in the opening quarter and never looking back. Six different Aggies scored in the opening eight minutes as UC Davis jumped out to the 6-2 lead. The lead was increased to 9-3 by halftime as Turpen had all three goals in the opening half.

In addition to Turpen, freshman Tom Jay, junior George Dingeldein and senior Brian Combs all added a pair of scores. In all, eight players scored for UC Davis as the Aggies beat the Banana Slugs for the second time this season.

"It was a good hard-fought game," said Aggie Head Coach Steve Doten. "It's always good to get a win against a conference opponent and this was an overall team effort."

In Sunday's second match, the Aggies jumped out to a 2-1 lead against Cal Baptist after the first quarter, but could not hold the lead as they dropped a 9-5 contest. The game was tied at 4-4 by halftime and following the third period, the Aggies trailed by just one goal at 6-5. With two minutes left and the Aggies trailing by one, UC Davis received a four-meter penalty shot to tie the game, but they could not convert and remained down by one.

UC Davis would have another chance later on a counterattack to cut the lead in half, but they could not capitalize and Cal Baptist used a counter of its own to score and put the game out of reach.

"We played another good game against Cal Baptist," said Doten. "We came out well but couldn't hold it."

UC Davis will next be in action on Sunday, November 3 when it travels to Berkeley to face the No.3 Golden Bears for a noon contest.
