Despite 14 goalie saves by Aggie redshirt freshman Kevin Peat, second-ranked Stanford broke away from a close first half to take a 12-4 win over No. 11 UC Davis in non-conference men's collegiate water polo action at Schaal Aquatics Center Thursday evening.
The Aggies move to 9-12 for the season. The Cardinal improves to 18-2 overall.
Senior driver Andrew Drake scored three goals to lead Stanford, while juniors Sage Wright and Janson Wigo each added two. For UC Davis, sophomore Cory Lyle converted a five-meter penalty shot, senior Adam Lindsay converted a 6-on-5 opportunity and Aaron Salit and Adam Bennett each scored natural goals to account for the four goals.
Peat's prowess in front of the cage proved invaluable in keeping the Aggies close in the early proceedings. He posted five saves in the opening quarter, including one against Ryan McCarthy's penalty shot and two against Stanford counterattack attempts. Peat also stopped Janson Wigo's penalty shot early in the second period - one of three additional saves in that frame - then added five blocks in the third period.
Will Handle-Katel put the Farm on the board with a goal in the opening minutes, then Lyle hit his five-meter penalty shot to tie the score at 1-1 exactly 60 seconds later. Stanford utility Jeffrey Schwimmer hit a backhanded shot at the 4:33 mark to take a 2-1 lead. Then shortly after McCarthy's stopped five-meter shot, Lindsay converted a man-up opportunity to tie the score at 2-2.
With 10 seconds remaining in the first period, Cardinal freshman Jacob Smith picked up a steal at midtank then proceeded to finish his own counterattack opportunity to give his team a 3-2 edge. This ignited a run of three straight Cardinal goals, stopped by Salit's outside shot in the waning seconds of the first half. Stanford held a 6-3 advantage at the break.
Peat stopped a pair of two-meter shots to start the third period, then nearly added a steal in defense of his cage. However, sophomore driver Alex Pulido won the battle for the loose ball and promptly sent the ball into the net, extending the Stanford lead to 8-3. The Cardinal successfully defended against five Aggie 6-on-5 chances in the second half, and Sage Wright hit outside shots in the third and fourth periods to maintain the lead.
Junior goalie Jimmie Sandman picked up five saves in three quarters for the Cardinal, then sophomore Brian Pingree added two more in the final period.
UC Davis returns to action with a home game against Western Water Polo Association Loyola Marymount on Saturday at noon.
