BERKELEY, Calif. -
Three UC Berkeley players scored a pair of goals and the Bears jumped out to a 3-1 first-quarter lead and never looked back in defeating No.16 UC Davis 9-5 in a men's water polo match Thursday evening at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 13-12 on the season while No.2 California improves to 16-4.
John Mann, Greg Panawek and Andrija Vasiljevic each scored two goals to lead the Bears. Panawek, Will Quist and Keola Richardson each scored in the first period as the Bears raced to the 3-1 lead. It would increase to 6-1 by halftime, with Aggie senior George Dingeldein scoring the Aggies' lone goal in the half.
The two teams played even in the third period, each scoring three goals. UC Davis cut the lead to 6-3 in the third on goals by Patrick Jacobson and Tom Jay, but Mann's back-to-back goals pushed the lead back to 8-3 with two minutes, 23 seconds left in the period. Dingeldein would add a fourth-quarter goal to close out the scoring.
For the game Dingeldein led the way with three goals while Jacobson and Jay finished with one. Senior Zach Wordes added seven saves in net for the Aggies.
