DAVIS, Calif. - Senior John Butler and junior Josh Stiling each performed hat tricks to help 10th-ranked UC San Diego protect its first-half lead in an 11-8 victory over No. 16 UC Davis in Western Water Polo Association men's action at Schaal Aquatics Center Thursday night.
The Aggies slip to 12-15 for the year and 10-5 in WWPA contests. The Tritons improve to 12-7 overall and 11-2 in conference play.
Sophomore Trevor Allen and senior Colin Hicks each scored two goals for UC Davis, which trailed by a 6-1 deficit at the halftime break. Freshman goalie Philip Bates tallied 10 saves, including two against UCSD power-play attempts.
Butler posted his three goals in the first half while Stiling netted all three of his after the break. Joe Dietrich also hit two goals while sophomore goalkeeper Cameron Ravanbach tallied 10 total stops, half of which came on five-man defensive situations.
Butler's three goals boosted the Tritons to their early halftime lead. He converted an assist from Dietrich at two meters early in the first period, scored on a skip shot with 2:25 left in that frame, then completed his trifecta soon after a 6-on-5 expired in the final minute before halftime.
UC Davis recovered from 1-for-14 shooting woes in the first half to put up four goals in the third period. Senior Matt Vowell assisted both Teddy Nicholson and Allen on 6-on-5 conversions during a 3-0 Aggie run that cut the deficit to 7-4. Hicks also converted an extra-man opportunity in that run. Senior center Hank Dickey fired a shot in from set with 14 seconds remaining in the third to bring the score to 9-5.
The Aggies tacked on three more goals in the final period, first on a Bernie Rogers 6-on-5 goal that literally flew through the net. Hicks hit a shot from the three spot with 2:29 left and Allen assisted junior Stuart Dooley on a counterattack in the final minute of play. However, UCSD hit some key goals to maintain at least a three-goal cushion down the stretch. Stiling, who had two goals in the third period, scored from two meters early in the fourth. Dietrich also managed a key 6-on-5 goal with 2:43 left. After Aggie senior Jared Clapham posted a big field save on a lob, Dietrich collected the rebound and punched in the putback to set the tally at 11-6.
UC San Diego finished with 11-for-36 shooting while UC Davis ended up at 8-for-32.
The Aggies will honor seven seniors in their home finale against No. 3 Stanford on Saturday. Game time is noon at Schaal Aquatics Center, following the women's water polo Blue-Gold intrasquad.
