LOS ANGELES - Senior Bernie Rogers tallied five goals while junior Chris Richardson added another three, helping No. 17 UC Davis overcome a first-quarter deficit en route to a 12-10 upset over No. 12 Loyola Marymount in a key Western Water Polo Association matchup at Burns Recreation & Aquatics Center Friday afternoon.

The Aggies improve to 10-12 overall and 2-0 in conference play. The Lions fall to 11-11 for the year and 1-2 in WWPA games.

Besides the scoring output of Rogers and Richardson, sophomore Alex Bagdasarian added two goals while freshman Max Vigeant and sophomore Austin Beckwith each tallied one. Sophomore goalkeeper Philip Bates tallied seven saves, including three in the fourth quarter.

For LMU, sophomore attacker Milutin Mitrovic scored four goals while Joe Ferretti and Jon Beck each netted two.

The Aggies faced a 3-1 deficit in the first quarter, took a 4-3 lead early in the second on back-to-back goals by Rogers, held a 7-5 halftime edge, then played even ball the rest of the way.

Mitrovic tied the contest at 4-4 with 6:14 to go in the second quarter, but Rogers answered with a successful power play less than a minute later to put UC Davis back up by one. Beckwith made it 6-4 with his goal with 1:12 left then the Aggies held their largest lead of the first half when Vigeant netted one to set the board at 7-4.

LMU closed the gap to a single goal on three occasions in the third quarter, but UC Davis responded each time -- twice within the next possession. Richardson hit a five-meter penalty shot early in the fourth quarter to boost the Aggie lead to 11-8, then converted a 6-on-5 with 2:32 remaining to extend the edge to four. UC Davis allowed a natural goal by Seth Coldren with 1:41 left and Mitrovic hit his fourth goal at the 0:13 mark to bring the score to its final state of 12-10.

Friday's win marks the first time UC Davis has beaten LMU since the 2011 conference semifinal game. The Lions were the preseason favorite to win the WWPA title, although they have lost to UC San Diego twice this season. The Aggies will face the No. 10 Tritons in La Jolla on Saturday at 1 p.m.
