BERKELEY, Calif. -
Freshman Tom Jay scored three goals but it wasn't enough as the No. 3 California Golden Bears defeated No. 20 UC Davis, 11-5, in a men's water polo match Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
With the loss the Aggies fall to 14-11 on the season while Cal improves to 15-4.
Cal took an early 4-0 lead six minutes into the first quarter on two goals from Attila Banhidy and scores by Joe Born and Andrew Stoddard. But with :56 remaining in the first stanza, Aggies' freshman driver Patrick Jacobson found himself in a struggle with Cal keeper Tim Kates and was able to force an underhand shot into the net to put UC Davis on the board, 4-1.
The second period was all Cal as Banhidy notched his third goal of the game and Todd Hylton tallied a pair of scores to give the Bears a 7-1 lead going into the intermission.
Cal Freshman goalkeeper Nate Bennett entered the cage to start the second half and faced a barrage of shots on goal. In fact, the Aggies outscored the Bears 3-2 in the third quarter to cut the Cal lead in half at one point, 8-4. The Aggies' George Dingeldein started them off two minutes into the second half, while Jay notched two of his team-leading three goals in the period. Cal's Jeff Leeper scored his third goal of the season at the 3:19 mark and Peter Conte added a score with :30 to play, giving the Bears a 9-4 lead.
Jay cut the Cal lead to four, 9-5, just 1:17 into the fourth period. But, the Bears' Vince Bevins and Tom Kurth closed out the scoring with two consecutive goals to win the match, 11-5.
The Aggies return to action next Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m. as they host UC Santa Cruz at Hickey Pool.
