DAVIS, Calif. - Jay Gerardi and Brett McCleave each scored three goals to lead No. 8 Long Beach State to a 12-7 win over UC Davis Friday evening at Schaal Aquatic Center. Senior Patrick Jacobson scored two and Conor Duignan tallied one in their final home game with the Aggies.
Long Beach got on the board early in the first quarter with a quick shot from Jay Gerardi 46 seconds into the game. The 49ers doubled the score with a power play goal scored by Gerardi. Stefan Ludecke tallied one with 1:21 on the clock to bring the 49er lead to 3-0. The Aggies were able to get on the board during the next possession as junior Kevin Bacharach tossed one in from outside the post. Bacharach tallied his second goal of the game on a man-up situation with only a second remaining on the clock. At the end of the first, the Aggies were within one as Long Beach led 3-2.
The 49ers fired back in the second with Gerardi scoring his third goal of the game to earn a hat trick on the day. Long Beach went on to score three more unanswered goals in the second bringing the score to 7-2 at half.
49er Joe Sherrin scored with 5:42 on the clock in the third to stretch Long Beach's lead to six goals before sophomore Nick Arrigo fired in his first goal less than a minute later. Arrigo added his second consecutive goal on a man-up power play with 3:29 left in the quarter. Patrick Jacobson added his first goal of the game to bring the score to 8-5 heading into the final quarter of play.
Reid Tomassi scored his second point of the game for the 49ers early in the fourth to give Long Beach a four-point advantage. The Aggies responded with a goal from Senior Conor Duignan, making this Duignan's seventh consecutive game with a goal scored. Long Beach's Brett McCleave answered with two back-to-back goals giving him a hat trick for the game. Jacobson had the last say when he scored on a fast break counter attack with 40 seconds remaining in the game. The final score had the 49ers ahead 12-7.
Friday's game was the last home match-up for Aggie seniors Patrick Jacobson, Conor Duignan, Tom Jay, Aaron Schelegle and Matt Jones. The five seniors were honored prior to the game and each started the match.
With the loss UC Davis' season record falls to 15-13. The Aggies will travel to Los Angeles next weekend to play in the Western Water Polo Association conference championships being held at Loyola Marymount. UC Davis will receive its seeding for the tournament on Monday.
