STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford freshman phenom Alex Bowen scored a game-high five goals to lead the fourth-ranked Cardinal to a 12-7 win over No. 12 UC Davis in men's collegiate water polo action at Avery Aquatic Center Sunday afternoon.

The Aggies fall to 20-11 overall. The Cardinal improves to 18-4. Both teams head to their respective conference tournaments: UC Davis in the Western Water Polo Association, Stanford in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Senior center Aaron Salit scored four goals for UC Davis, while Luke Collins, Anders MacCarthy and Bernie Rogers each tallied one. Collins also had three assists, all to Salit. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Peat was another bright spot, tallying 13 saves with two steals.

Salit put the Aggies on the board in the first period, MacCarthy converted a 6-on-5 chance late in the second quarter, then Salit hit his team's lone third-quarter goal at the 5:02 mark. In the fourth, UC Davis finished on a 4-1 run during the final six minutes. Rogers hit a goal from the 2 position, then Collins completed a counterattack. Salit completed his hat trick with a goal from set, then found the net at the two post on another extra-man opportunity.

With three goals in Saturday's contest against Cal and four at The Farm, Salit brings his season total to 75. He moves into fourth on the school's single-season list, amassing the highest total since Mike Gotelli set the Aggie benchmark of 115 in 1997.

Besides Bowen, junior Paul Rudolph scored two goals for Stanford while five other Cardinal players netted one goal each. Stanford led 4-1 after the first quarter and 7-2 at the halftime break. The edge swelled to 11-3 at the 5:56 mark in the fourth before the Aggies closed out with a strong finish.

UC Davis will likely hold the No. 4 seed in the WWPA Championship, hosted by UC San Diego from November 17-20. The tournament champion earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship, held in Berkeley in early December.
