WHITTIER, Calif. - Freshman goalkeeper Philip Bates tallied 11 saves, sophomore center Teddy Nicholson scored two goals and senior Anders MacCarthy netted the game-winner in leading 16th-ranked and fourth-seeded UC Davis to a 6-5 victory over 19th-ranked and fifth-seeded Santa Clara in the quarterfinal round of the Western Water Polo Association men's championship at Whittier College's Slade Aquatic Center Friday afternoon.

The Aggies, now 14-16 for the year, advance to the conference semifinal against top-seeded UC San Diego.

MacCarthy scored the only goal of the fourth quarter, hitting an even-strength attempt with 5:12 remaining to crack the 5-5 tie. The Aggies fended off two Santa Clara power-play opportunities to preserve the win. Sophomore Trevor Allen, senior Jared Clapham and senior Colin Hicks also had goals for UC Davis.

The Broncos drew first blood in the contest when Jimmy Moore converted a 6-on-5 chance in the first two minutes of play. Nicholson equalized later in the frame on an extra-man opportunity with 1:34 left in the period.

The Aggies piled up four goals in a high-scoring second quarter. Nicholson scored in the first possession as the Aggies' successful sprint carried over a late SCU exclusion from the first. Hicks scored on a five-meter penalty shot at the 4:56 mark to put the score at 3-1. The Broncos scored three goals in the second, each time cutting the lead to one. But goals by Clapham at the 4:16 mark and Allen with 0:50 to go helped the Aggies maintain the lead.

After UC Davis failed to convert back-to-back 6-on-5 opportunities early in the third, SCU junior utility Theo Nasser scored the only goal of the period to tie the contest at 5-5. A Kyle Nadel kickout offered the Aggies yet another power play but UC Davis did not take the lead. MacCarthy's score in the fourth provided the difference.

Bates, a WWPA All-Freshman selection, tallied 10 of his saves before the halftime break.

UC Davis squares off with No. 10 UC San Diego at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The winner of the WWPA tournament earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship in early December.
