WHITTIER, Calif. - Senior utility Matt Vowell scored one goal in each of the four quarters but top-seeded and 10th-ranked UC San Diego came away with an 11-9 win over fourth-seeded and 16th-ranked UC Davis in the Western Water Polo Association championship semifinal round at Whittier College's Slade Aquatic Center Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies move to 14-17 for the year.

In addition to Vowell's four goals, Bernie Rogers, Colin Hicks, Chris Richardson, Jared Clapham and Teddy Nicholson each added one. Freshman goalkeeper Philip Bates tallied eight saves.

For UC San Diego, four players -- Brian Roach, Brian Donohoe, John Butler and WWPA Player of the Year Josh Stiling -- each netted two goals. Cameron Ravanbaugh recorded 10 saves in front of the Triton cage.

The Aggies recovered from a 6-3 halftime deficit to tie the conest at 9-9 late in the fourth. Richardson and Vowell hiit 6-on-5 goals in the first quarter to tie the contest at 1-1 and 2-2, respectively. Vowell posted a natural goal with 5:04 in the second to cut the Triton lead to 4-3 but Roach scored on a power play with 1:58 to go and Butler added a tally with 11 seconds remaining to lift UCSD to its halftime margin.

Nicholson and Vowell netted goals early in the second to cut the Triton lead to one, then after Donohoe doubled the lead back to 7-5 on an even-strength goal, Clapham converted another 6-on-5 chance to bring UC Davis to within a single-goal deficit.

Donohoe scored again in the final seconds of the third and Lukas Syka hit a goal minutes into the fourth to push the Tritons to a 9-6 lead, their largest of the second half. But the Aggies responded with three straight to equalize: Hicks at the 4:53 mark, Rogers on a 6-on-5 with 3:09 remaining, and Vowell on even strength to tie the contest at 9-9 with 2:25 remaining.

However, Stiling scored on the next possession to put the Tritons up for good. Butler netted his second goal at the 1:18 mark to set the score to its ultimate 11-9 state. UC Davis had a 6-on-5 chance and a five-meter penalty down the final stretch but could not convert either opportunity.

UC Davis will face the loser of the Loyola Marymount-Air Force semifinal in Sunday's third-place game at 12:30 p.m.
