DAVIS, Calif. -
Conor Duignan and David Welch each scored a pair of goals as No.3 UC Davis jumped out early then cruised to an 8-4 victory over No.6 Santa Clara in first round action at the 2004 Western Water Polo Association Men's Championships, being played at the Schaal Aquatics Center.
With the win the Aggies improve to 17-14 on the season while Santa Clara falls to 9-21.
The Aggies busted out in the first, taking a 5-1 lead at the end of the period. Duignan had both of his scores in the opening minute while Kevin Bacharach added one as UC Davis led 3-0 after just a minute and a half. Tom Jay and Patrick Jacobson also added first period goals for UC Davis.
The teams played even the rest of the way as each scored one goal in the second period. Santa Clara had a pair of goals in the third, one each from Austin Brizgys and Kevin Starry, to cut the lead to 6-4 after three, but got no closer as Michael Long and Welch closed out the game with fourth period goals.
In the Aggie net freshman Mike McGee recorded 12 saves while his counterpart, Peter Moore, made 3.
UC Davis will face No.2 Loyola Marymount in one of Friday's semifinals beginning at 2 p.m. LMU needed overtime to defeat Whittier, 12-11, in Thursday's action.
