SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Senior utility Carlos Martinez scored four goals while senior attacker Matt Richardson added three, leading 12th-ranked and second-seeded UC Davis to a 14-10 win over Air Force in the quarterfinal round of the Western Water Polo Association tournament Friday at Sullivan Aquatics Center.

The Aggies, who improve to 17-9 for the season, will face UC San Diego in Saturday's semifinal round. The Falcons, among the teams receiving votes in Wednesday's national coaches' poll, slips to 11-18 overall.

Senior Cory Lyle and junior Aaron Salit also netted two goals apiece for the UC Davis, while Anders MacCarthy, Walter Eggert and Colin Hicks each chipped in one. Junior goalkeeper Kevin Peat posted 13 saves in defense of the Aggie cage.

Martinez scored two goals as part of a six-goal fourth quarter - an unusual occurrence for a UC Davis team better known for its defense. The Aggies held a 6-3 lead at halftime and an 8-5 edge through three quarters, allowing AFA to approach to within two goals with 5:18 left in the fourth period. Salit and Lyle planted goals within a span of less than a minute to bump the lead to 12-8, but Falcon utility Cruz Smithson responded with a a natural goal and senior Bobby Geiger converted a 6-on-5 opportunity to put the lead at 12-10.

Richardson scored with less than two minutes remaining to extend the UC Davis lead back to three and Martinez hit the coup de grace in the final seconds for his team's 14th goal.

In all six of Friday's games, the higher-seeded team emerged victorious. Loyola Marymount defeated Redlands, 13-6; UC San Diego beat Pomona-Pitzer, 11-8; and host Santa Clara dispatched Claremont-Mudd-Scripps by a 13-4 final to join the Aggies in the semifinal round.
