UC San Diego Rides Early Charge To Third-Place Win Over Aggies

DAVIS, Calif. - Chris Eichholz scored three total goals, including a pair of consecutive scores in the second quarter, to help UC San Diego hold onto a 9-7 win over host UC Davis in the third-place game of the Western Water Polo Association tournament at Schaal Aquatics Center.

The Aggies finish their season at 17-16.

UC San Diego opened with five unanswered goals before freshman Adam Lindsay ended the Aggie scoring drought at 4:08 in the second quarter. Curtis Williamson and Jeff Hunt each added goals in the final minutes of the first half to give the Tritons a 7-2 edge at the break.

UC Davis scored three straight goals in the middle portion of the third quarter, including two 6-on-5 scores by Patrick Jacobson, helping cut the lead to 8-5. UCSD's Adrian Jerkovic hit a man-up goal with 3:03 left in the third to extend the lead to four goals.

Jacobson added two goals in the final 75 seconds of the game, bringing the final winning margin to two.

Colin McElroy posted seven saves in the Triton net, while his counterpart, Aggie freshman Mike McGee, recorded eight. McGee had five saves in the first quarter alone.
